Anti-spam registry?

Anti-Spam Bill Passes – Senate votes to stop ‘sea of trash’

I’m torn, really torn, about this. I would love, as all of us would love, to not get spam anymore. Better yet, I’d like to ship every bulk spammer to a Turkish prison. However, this does establish the federal government as a policeman for the Internet, which is both an expansion of powers and an almost impossible task.

Certainly some legislation would put a dent in spamming…but so many spammers are already shady operations, I don’t believe it would significantly curb their ops to have a “do not spam” registry. In fact, too many spammers would thank the government for assembling a list of millions of working addresses, and then spam it!
