cgelogo.jpgLady Death’s creator Brian Pulido gets interviewed by The Pulse. The interview doesn’t offer any further news about CrossGen, the current publisher of Lady Death, as Pulido is quite mum on the topic, except to say that he is very supportive of CGE. The piece mainly centers on the new Lady Death book which picks up after first CrossGen series and is described as a No Man’s Land version of Lady Death. The art is by Jim Cheung, formerly of CGE’s Scion.

For those who don’t know the backstory of Lady Death’s transfer to CrossGen, here it is in brief. Ten years ago, Lady Death was launched as a bad girl comic where this white-skinned beauty with bazooms til Tuesday pranced around in a costume that could be best described as “naked with body paint.” As was typical of many late-90s comics, there was more interest in statues and action figures and bawdy covers than in the actual story of the character. Then, when Chaos comics went belly up, CrossGen’s Mark Alessi bought out the rights to the character as a favor to his friend Pulido and transferred her to CrossGen. Given that CrossGen has been trying to publish accessible works, many wondered how this naughty character was going to fly at CGE. However, as you can tell from the preview artwork, Lady Death has been redesigned with a less-titillating costume and more of a fantasy focus.

The question now: will Lady Death continue to be produced if Mark Alessi no longer has the money to give publishing gifts to his friends? That this new Lady Death series is even being announced is another good sign that CrossGen is avoiding a full implosion…but we could all use some answers from CGE at this point.
