Newsarama has an interview with Cully Hamner which shows the new Blue Beetle costume.

I will reserve comment, but you all go ahead and say what you think.

I’m guessing that this Beetle will be more mystically-powered than acrobatic & technological (i.e. derived from the original one). Maybe a mix, judging from the weird fingertips, but overall, he just feels more magically derived.

I’m not about to pass any judgments out of knowledge that this won’t be the same character I liked; what ultimately will determine if this is crap or not is the writing and story-based art, not the costume design. Seeing one cover with the design just seems too early to me to cry over Ted and curse the creators before giving them a shot.

That said, this is a bit ‘eh’. The upper body is a bit too busy – between the ribbing on the shoulders & elbows, the segmentation on the armor, and the mask/facepiece, this will no doubt be an easy costume to mess up. Use of another shade of blue instead of black would’ve been nice, too, but that’s minor. Overall, it looks too modern, and odds are good that a later artist will (if the character lasts) change the design to one less busy down the line.

Simply put: don’t like it. I much prefered the sleek, but simple outfit of the Ted Kord Blue Beetle.

Looks a bit like the Kingdom Come Blue Beetle Armor. I’ll wait to see the character actually in action before I judge, but so far I have no major problem having a very different look if it’s going to be a different guy under the mask as well. I mean, Ted’s costume looked nothing like Garret’s.

You don’t want to know my first reaction to the new Blue Beetle costume.

Simply – I don’t like it. It looks too dark. It looks like the approach for this new Blue Beetle is grim and gritty.

I liked Ted Kord. I like how light-hearted the Blue Beetle was.

I’m not a fan of the whole dark, grim and gritty, realistic approach.

If DC or Marvel is going to kill a character. Kill the character and leave him or her dead. Don’t bring back the character with a different look, or a new approach. If the character didn’t work the first time, chances are a new approach isn’t going to work.

Sorry, but I’m not looking forward to the new Blue Beetle.

    It’s Extreeeeme Blue Beetle!

He’s going to clean up El Paso from all those super-villains, I suppose. Let’s see, there’s, ummmm, maybe that guy who fought El Diablo, and ummm, that other guy who fought El Diablo.

Air Wave is based in Dallas, maybe they can hook up, after all they’re in the same state – it’s only 647 miles away.

Um.. it’s overcomplicated and bulky. And it’s much, much too dark and gloomy to be worn by the kind of carefree acrobat that I want the Blue Beetle to be. But then, they did shoot MY Blue Beetle in the head, so it’s pretty clear DC and I just aren’t going to see eye to eye on the Beetle legacy for the time being.

I don’t like it too much myself, it’s the giant pinchers over the back that really bug me. I have visions of them being grasped by some baddy and BB being flung to kingdom come…

Cully is great. It Rocks. It looks like the beetle scrab has powers after all. My guess from the countdown book is that the wizard shazam unleased the power of the scarb and that it is Ted brought back to life and he’s pissed.

Unfortunately Giffen came out and said that the very first thing that this Beetle isn’t is Ted Kord. But he may very well be pissed.

He also won’t do a story where Ted Kord comes back to life and fights the current version, like that story in the eighties where Dan Garrett fights Ted Kord.

I’m disapointed. I know what I’d do writing Ted Kord.

there are some further sketches here which show it to be less bulky than some people are thinking:

gut feel is that i like it and i’m looking forward to the new book. the giffen/jli beetle wasn’t the real beetle for me as keith pushed him too far towards being the class clown. the len wein monthly cut the balance better – beetle had a sense of humour but was still a serious hero.

i’ll miss ted, i really don’t believe that it’s going to be him, but i’ll give the new book a few issues and see how it pans out. cully’s art looks good and i’m liking the comments i’m reading from keith giffen enough to forgive him for turning ted into the joke that he became…
