War of the War of the Worlds

Posted on May 6, 2005 by thehutch

Steven Spielberg’s new “War of the Worlds” film debuts this July, updating the classic H.G. Wells story to take place in modern California. It stars Tom Cruise. But wait! There’s ANOTHER “War of the Worlds” movie coming out in JUNE, straight to DVD! Hey, it’s a public domain source…and this one’s sticking to a straight…

Big grump waves goodbye to Star Trek

Posted on May 6, 2005 by thehutch

I’ll have a lot more to say about Star Trek: Enterprise’s cancellation, but for now check out Orson Scott Card’s gleefull Strange New World: No Star Trek in which he gives a departing kick to a show that he clearly deems a bastard son of sci-fi.

Who’s searching our site already?

Posted on May 6, 2005 by thehutch

I don’t know who was searching our site for Batman Begins news, but I think it’s worth pointing out that we don’t have our archives up and running yet. Maybe they’ll be restored, and I’ll certainly announce it when they’re back up.

Good thing Micah Ian Wright came clean when he did!

Veterans’ Web Sites Expose Pseudo Heroes, Phony Honors. Turns out there are 300 people claiming to be a Navy Seal for every actual Navy Seal. [Hat tip to Lucianne.com]

Getting up and running

Posted on May 6, 2005 by thehutch

Here’s what’s happened: I had to upgrade Monitor Duty to a newer version of Moveable Type. The old version was far too prone to sabotage. I’d disabled the “comments” section long ago because it was too-easily spammable; however, while comments weren’t on the site, they were still being generated every day by spam-robots. I was…

We have a site again!

Posted on May 3, 2005 by thehutch

Okay, okay, the thing is grade-a cheesy starter page, for the moment. But it’s up and it works. I may try to salvage the archives; we’ll see if it’s possible. I’m also playing with ColorCache to try to find a site color scheme that I like.

Well put!

Posted on November 3, 2004 by thehutch

A great cartoon about the turnout for the 2004 election, which was said to be almost 120 million people across the country. (Here in Minnesota we had a just-shy-of-80% turnout.)

Vote for the Kennedy of your choice, but vote!

Posted on November 2, 2004 by thehutch

I just got back from voting. In 2002 I went to my polling place in the evening and there wasn’t a line. Of course, that was an off-year election and a different time of day, so there’s not really a basis for comparison. Today, there were about 40-60 people ahead of me and it took…
