He made us laugh

Posted on September 30, 2003 by thehutch

I wasn’t aware that the man who performed “Make ’em Laugh” in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ had passed away. Then again, I never thought he was still alive. I was also surprised to learn that the Make ’em Laugh piece was largely improvised while Gene Kelly was sick. Amongst his final words: “I’d like to…

Why we like ICv2

Posted on September 29, 2003 by thehutch

ICv2 News – CrossGen Restructures I appreciate ICv2’s fair and business-like news reporting. It’s truly a rarity in comic book news, where spin, rumor and colorful statements abound. While some say “the knives are out for CrossGen”, it truly is news when a publisher that prided itself on on-time printing, a unique studio system and…

Orson Welles as the Batman? No.

Posted on September 29, 2003 by thehutch

Mark Millar has a piece on the Batman movie that Orson Welles wanted to do in 1946 and how the studios derailed it when they objected to his playing the role himself. It’s an intriguing, provocative piece filled with great casting ideas, like Jimmy Cagney as the Riddler and Basil Rathbone playing the Joker. Wait!…

Elia Kazan passes on

Posted on September 29, 2003 by thehutch

Oscar-Winning Director Elia Kazan Dies at 94. I can’t believe that FoxNews didn’t have it’s own obituary to run and had to use this Associated Press obit. Talk about Fair and Balanced; the way this AP bio mentions his naming Communists, you’d never know Kazan was unrepentantly proud of it! Instead it paints him as…

Superheroes and real heroes

Posted on September 24, 2003 by thehutch

In the late 1970s, I stayed at my grandparents’ antique-filled house in Illinois for a few days. Looking for something to do, I found a pile of comics. They were beat up, as though someone had read them many times. Ghost stories. Horror stories. Superhero tales. There was Man-Thing and Ghosts and Witching Hour, World’s…

I ran today’s Monitor Duty page through the Jar-Jargonizer. Bizarre results. Even our links to other sites are Jar-Jarred, like “Digital Webb’in!” Thank to Phil for sending me the link!

“Job Wanted” – ORDER YOURS TODAY!!!

Posted on September 24, 2003 by thehutch

Our new comic book, Job Wanted, should be available for ordering through the next Previews magazine. IMPORTANT: We hope that all of you in this audience will ask your local comic shops to reserve a copy for you and stock additional copies on their shelves. We really can’t overemphasize how important that is, as most…

Fanzing art challenge gets art teacher’s attention!

Posted on September 23, 2003 by thehutch

Fanzing’s Painting Parodies Art Challenge was held back in 2001 and the contest entries have gotten the attention of art teacher (and historian) Heidi Cordova Strang at the University of Colorado at Denver. Ms. Strang has asked for permission to use some of them in her lectures! I always said Fanzing would get artists noticed…but…

Larry Miller on John Ritter’s passing

Posted on September 23, 2003 by thehutch

Okay, last off-topic thing for a while (if you consider articles about actors off-topic). I know many of our readers were upset by John Ritter’s death, so I wanted to pass along this touching tribute by the great Larry Miller. Read it and weep. I don’t mean “read it and weep” like I’m laying down…
