Map to Atlantis

Posted on January 24, 2007 by thehutch

Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #48 contains a map of Atlantis which Kurt Busiek created after asking for information from everyone’s buddy John Wells. John tells me he included every underwater society he could find, including the race that kidnapped Elongated Man on his honeymoon.

The Secret of “52”…DECODED!

Posted on January 18, 2007 by thehutch

This week, the “secret of 52” was revealed in the text page at the back of DC’s comics. A long, pointless ramble of text clearly hides a secret message. All you have to do is figure out the code. To discover what it was, I employed the surefire method that always works. Namely, I didn’t…

Question of the Day: Can you support a series via the trade?

Posted on January 4, 2007 by thehutch

Just got back from Jimmy Jams. Lean week, actually. The only thing in my pull list is “52”. I perused the shelf holding the week’s newly arrived Trade Paperbacks and grabbed the second volume of “Manhunter”. Manhunter is one of those books, like “Hourman”, that every comic afficianado says you should be reading. That it’s…

What’s a brother got to do to sell a rare Batman poster?

Posted on January 3, 2007 by thehutch

It’s bizarre, but I can’t get any takers for this rare Batman poster on eBay. I’ve run the auction twice and not gotten any bids, so now I don’t get reimbursed for the charges of listing it twice. I’m really surprised no one’s bidding on it. It’s a poster that was created only for a…

Martin Nodell passes away

Posted on December 10, 2006 by thehutch

The creator of the Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott (and thus, the founder of the entire Green Lantern legacy), has passed away. Here’s the news from Matt Hawes of Comics Unlimited: Late last month, Dave Cockrum, creator of Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler, passed away. Now, sadly, another wonderful person and artist has left us,…

Superfriends – “Not for Air”

Posted on November 17, 2006 by thehutch

A few years ago, Adult Swim did these short bits called “Not For Air” which played during commercial breaks. They consist of real cartoon footage that are either edited or redubbed. Here is one of them. I wish I could find the other one I’ve seen, where Fred Flintstone is arguing with Wilma. UPDATE: I…

Is bastiches really a word?

Posted on November 13, 2006 by thehutch

I always thought that “bastiches” was a swear word made up for Lobo. It’s obviously a gender-neutral combo of “bastards” and, begging your pardon, “bitches”. (Odd thought: Can’t a woman be a bastard if her parents aren’t married?) It’s an interesting way to disguise moderately-offensive curse words into a form that can make it into…

Superman sequel set for 2009

Posted on November 6, 2006 by thehutch

“Superman Returns” is barely a break-even movie, and it had a LOT of problems and took itself way too seriously with a disturbing plotline where Superman’s courting Lois would be breaking up a family and it’s just not a very enjoyable, fun movie… but they’re going to make another one. Bryan Singer Signs On for…

Cinnamon: El Ciclo

Posted on September 20, 2006 by thehutch

I’m going over a few of the better books I bought from Scott Beatty during his last clearance sale. “Cinnamon: El Ciclo” is fantastic! I wish I’d bought this and supported it at the time. It’s a taught thriller with compelling characters, plenty of violence and grit (though without anywhere near the swearing and gore…
