Jonah Goldberg on The Corner was talking about how Ronald Reagan once mentioned that the first thing he read in a paper was the Spider-Man comic, and this prompted a reader to send in a rather over-thinking-it-a-bit response about Spider-Man’s ethics and such. (It’s a tad much, in that I don’t believe the daily newspaper comic delved much into characterization.) That prompted another reader to submit this reply:
Don’t over-analyze about the Spider-Man anecdote. I have a friend who loves telling that story about Reagan, and the actual quote was something like “the first thing I read in the paper is Spider-Man, to see if those wrestlers have gotten down to the ring yet.” He was making fun of Stan Lee’s ridiculously slow pacing.
