Everyone misses Unca Cheeks’ site, right? For several years, Kent “Unca Cheeks” Orlando wrote one of the funniest and most insightful Silver Age comic analysis sites around. Then the Internet bubble burst, all those “free unlimited hosting and unlimited bandwidth” deals disappeared and Cheeks was faced with a massive site and nowhere to put it.
One of Cheeks’ fans saved all of the HTML files and images, and a few years ago I took a copy and cleaned up the HTML. (Netscape Composer in the late 1990s was NOT a good design tool. Eliminating junk code and adding stylesheets for the whole site shrank the HTML file size by 50+%.) I’ve since gotten those files back to Cheeks and his wonderful wife Rachel, and recommended my own server host, Powweb, as a company that could handle the big site. But that was a while ago, and still no sign of the site.
I’ve now been told that something is up. Something big. Something that will make you all smile.
And that’s all I can say for now. I’m not allowed to reveal what it is. But let’s just say that if it comes to be I will have the news here.
So why the post? Because the fact that Unca Cheeks’ Files are not gone forever IS news, and I’m sure that it will make many of you happy to hear this.
If you’d like to give your thoughts on Cheeks’ site, head on over to our Forum. I’ll make sure Kent sees it and is aware that the passions to see more from him are mighty ones, indeed.
