Monitor Duty’s Superman Returns Contest

UPDATE: THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER. COMMENTS CLOSED.

To celebrate the debut of “Superman Returns”, Monitor Duty is holding a a contest to give away a Kryptonite Pen and a Superman Returns poster.

In reviewing all of the advance publicity about the new Superman movie, I found one intriguing question: why are Superman movies always about Lex Luthor? Lex is his arch-enemy, of course, but he’s the least showy of all possible enemies. Of course, given the cost of special effects, a villain whose power is that he sneers while being bald is much cheaper to put on screen. Granted. But, if this movie is profitable enough, there should certainly be a sequel. Who would you want as a villain (see a list of Superman’s Rogue’s Gallery), and why? More Lex Luthor? “More” Phantom Zone villains (given that the original Superman movies are still in continuity, they’d be returning)? Brainiac? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Parasite? Metallo? How about Terra-Man, the space cowboy who rides a flying horse?

That question inspired the new contest. Thank you to the folks at the WB for donating our prizes.

Win a pen! Win a poster!

  1. While he’s not a villian, I’d like to see Martian Manhunter introduced in the next movie. Powerwise he’d be on par with Superman, so the customary first meeting fight between the two could be great. It would also be a possible launching point for a Justice League movie. Most importantly though, they could play with the whole “two-strange-visitors-from-other-planets-but-one-is-more-accepted-because-he-looks-like-one-of-us-and-the-other-is-ostracized-in-spite-of-his-actions” thing.

  2. I want Batman to be the “villain” in the next Superman movie.

Funny, though. The question makes me realize I don’t know many Superman villains! Brainiac, Mr. Mxyplix (sp), Luthor, Bizarro Superman, Darkseid … who else is there?

    Stephen

  3. Kal-El needs to face a villain with BALLS – and the definition of BALLS is DARKSEID.

Next Batman villain should be BANE (see BALLS).

    NO GOOFY VILLAINS

  4. Good question. I think I’d like to see Mongul as the next villain. He’s one of the few Superman villains that in the comics has struck terror into the heart of the Man of Steel.

  5. For the sequel to Superman Returns, I would like to see multiple villians, such as the Parasite & Metallo. These two would bring such weakness enducing villians to the screen. Plus with Metallo you can tie into the idea from Superman/Batman that he’s Batman’s parents killer… even if hes not.. But it would be great to lead into a Superman/Batman movie!

  6. I think it’d be interesting to see the Queen of Fables. I realize she’s a JLA villain, but I could see her working as a Superman only one in a movie (and she did do a guest villain spot during Gail Simone’s Action Comics). The plus side to her would be two fold. One would be dealing with a little known by the public Superman weaknes, magic. The other would be introducing a female villain for him to tangle with, allowing that great Batman/Catwoman dynamic to be played with.

  7. I would love to see Darkseid on screen. If done correctly he could be amazing. He is as powerful if not more then Supes. I really enjoyed him on the Justice League cartoon. Superman’s speech about how he feels like he lives in a world of cardboard could be used in the movie. It would be awesome.

  8. I have always thought Lex was decent villan in the comics and in the cartoons, but just doesn’t translate well to live action because he is after all just a human. Mr. Mxyzptlk would bring back unwanted comedy to the franchise. With Metallo or Brainiac alone there would possibly be to much comparison with the Terminator movies. Maybe Lex teamed up with Brainiac, like in the Justice League cartoons, would be a good candidate.

  9. I’d like to see a Anti-Superman League of low-power but annoying villains out to wear him down. No need for drawn-out origin sequences, just lots of big action. Riot can start some one-man riots, Prankster or Toyman to threaten the general public, and in the end Luthor is behind it all.

  10. I’d love to see a Darkseid vs Superman movie. Good old DS skirts the problem that Sups should be albe to KO most oppenents in .01 seconds, and goes to the classic comic convention of exploring the hero by pitting them against their dark reflection.

Keep the plot straight forward and fun. Boom tubes show up all over earth. They roll over conventional armies, but aren’t much trouble for Supes. He sneaks back in one, fights DS a bit to a stalemate, but needs to return to earth. DS moves on to greener pastures, leaving Supes to figure out what he really is trying to protect.

  11. mr. freeze, poison ivy, and bane. all played by the rock. or brainiac. people know brainiac.

  12. I would like to see Brainiac (Ed Hannigan design), since he would be visually pleasing enough, while still interesting enough to have a story devoted to him. You could also do a Luthor/Brainiac team up fairly easy, so it could tie in fairly well.

  13. Okay, as a scene setter, at the beginning, he should take out a giant Toyman robot. But he’s not strong enough (or, really, interesting enough) to carry a picture. For the feature villain, Lex Luthor, through numorous agents. No Metallo, since I think Kryptonite should be played down a bit, but guys like Parasite, Riot, (think about how awesome Madrox was in X3) Toyman again, (to be taken out with humorous speed)and Live Wire (from the animated series, yes, but she’s in the comics now, and it could be interesting).

There would be a huge final battle alluded to throughout the course of the movie, Luthor’s “master plan”, an imperfect clone called the Kryptonian. Yeah, it’s Bizarro, and people will KNOW it’s Bizarro, but that’s not what a brilliant super-scientist would call his creation. That’s what a hipster would call it. But it could be called “bizarre”.

Of course, when the smoke is cleared, Superman will see the entire thing is just a distraction, to hide Luthor’s true motives: he’s running for President of the United States. Boom! Roll credits; wait for sequel.

  14. A big problem with drafting villains for the film versions of established superhero franchises is the need for everything to be grandiose; for example, one of the best Spider-Man villains, the Vulture, would _never_ make it into one of the films as the major villain. He’s too weird.

What I’d really like to see is someone like Bizarro: off-beat, funny, sad– a creature with a lot of pathos. Such a film wouldn’t be so much about the threat he presents as about Superman as a character, and how he reacts to Bizarro.

If superhero films are going to outlast the public’s current fascination to become a major genre, then they have to break out of the bigger-better-top-the-last-one mentality and start branching out– like superhero comics– into different tones and different takes on the characters.

That being said, Superman III was a resounding failure. 🙂

  15. The Space Cowboy sounds pretty interesting to me. How awesome would it be to see Superman vs. The Space Cowboy.

  16. I would like the next villain to be Braniac. For it seems logcal that he be the next in line to be Superman’s villain in the movies to come. He is Formidable. With Slomon Grundy or Bizzaro as a side villain.

  17. Three part series on the death of Superman: Lois struggles with her love for Superman and Richard White while Clark grapples with the decision of whether or not to tell her who he is. Lex Luthor sends a beacon into space hoping to rally support in his mission to destroy Superman which reveals the location of earth to Braniac who arrives on earth with his robotic guardian metallo (who is not actually referred to as Metallo, yet bears resemblance to the comic book supervillian)

Braniac develops a plan to destroy Superman that will first require him to be distracted. After Metallo is quickly destroyed by Superman Braniac has Lex Luthor (who ironically serves as lackey to the more powerful Braniac) kidnap Richard White who is then genetically mutated into a monster who’s cybernetic body is made to channel radioactive kryptonic energy. (Conduit)

As a result of the physical and mental strain he has been endured during the transformation, and the telekenetic manipulation of Braniac, Conduit (Richard White) begins destroying Metropolis by overloading it’s Electical grids and causing explosions in an insane and erratic manner. This attracts the attention of Superman, who is nearly killed after a brief exchange of words and a kryptonic blast from Conduit. Richard seems at least partly in control, as he keeps repeating “you would take her from me, you would take her love” in a furious manner.

With Superman close to death, the now 13 year old Jason White (who does not react aversely to Kryptonite) must engage the out of control villain Conduit. After a brief and destructive battle during which Jason white struggles to harness and contol his powers as the son of Superman, Conduit overwhelms him. At the last moment before killing Jason, Richard breaks the telekenetic link from Braniac and in an act of sacrifice destroys himself by overloading his own body with electrical and radioactive energy to spare Metropolis, Jason, and Superman.

Meanwhile it is revealed that Braniac’s intention is to set loose the Doomsday monster on the Man of Steel and the distraction of Conduit was meant to allow for a gestation period to take place. Doomsday breaks free from his harness early and nearly kills Braniac, but loses interest and instead heads for the city of Metropolis.

Doomsday quickly dispatches Jason White, who is saved from death when Doomsday’s attention is pulled to the now partially recovered Superman.

In the middle of the now evacuated city of Metropolis, an epic battle takes place between Doomsday and the Man of Steel, whom Braniac and Doomsday both refer to as “the last son of Kypton” or “kal-el” implying they played some part in the destruction of kypton.

The battle nearly levels the city, and ends when both figures strike simultaneous final blows, shattering all the windows around them. Superman and Doomsday are both killed.

During the memorial service Lois Lane is confronted by a man who claims to have information pertaining to Superman. The man turns out to be Bruce Wayne, who reveals to Lois that Superman was in fact Clark Kent.

    That’s part one.

So basically… uh… put all the villains in.
