You’re all wondering if I’m despondent after what happened to my favorite superhero this week in “52”?
Are you kidding?
SPOILER SPACE FOR THIS WEEK’S ISSUE OF 52
FANTASTIC!
I’d suspected that that was gingold Ralph was drinking, just because they were making such a point of showing him with the flask… and I knew that Gingold was an acquired taste. However, Dr. Fate’s statement that Ralph was imbibing an intoxicant kept me from being sure; it never occurred to me that the Fate helmet could be fooled.
I know, you must think I’m dejected that Ralph is dead.
Of course, the story is not over.
It’s a magnificent trick. Ralph now has Neron trapped in the tower. Neron could bring Sue back, but Ralph didn’t have anything he wanted. But now, the only person who could have released Neron from the enchantment is dead.
Like that’s any problem for Neron. All he has to do is bring Ralph back to life and ask for the spell to release him. Ralph will, so long as he gets Sue back. Ralph has, thus, paid the magic price for his reward.
And if Neron doesn’t ever do it, Ralph and Sue are in the afterlife together, and Ralph died heroically. It’s win-win.
Best issue of 52 yet. Well, except for the Montoya part which is ridiculously forced, but we can’t have everything.

I totally agree with you hutch. So far I’ve found most of the ‘conclusions’ for a lot of the stories in 52 to be kind of disappointing and underwhelming. So far this has been the only storyline which I’ve been satisfied with how it ended. Heck I wasn’t even that much of a fan of Ralph (nothing against him, I just hadn’t seen much of him) but now I agree, he rocks.
And yeah, no matter what happens, Ralph still gets to be with Sue – a happy ending all around.
P.S. I doubt the fate helmet can be fooled, but you have to remember, that really wasn’t the fate helmet. (in fact, if I read helmet of Fate DC correct, the helm should be bouncing around the universe right now during 52)
I guess I didn’t explain correctly:
If it WAS the Fate helmet, I doubt it could be fooled. It never occurred to me that it wasn’t the helmet of Fate and thus fool-able.
I must admit…I don’t know when Ralph dusted the helmet for prints without Faust realizing it.
