I just got back from voting. In 2002 I went to my polling place in the evening and there wasn’t a line. Of course, that was an off-year election and a different time of day, so there’s not really a basis for comparison. Today, there were about 40-60 people ahead of me and it took about a half hour.
Every election year, media people bemoan the turnout. It’s never high enough for them. This past week, it’s occurred to me that if there were ever anything near 100% turnout our polling places couldn’t even cope with those numbers! Nevertheless, I want to encourage everyone to go out and vote.
One good thing about a high turnout is that it offsets the cheating. 100 Marquette students may cheat again, like they did in 2000, but duplicate votes can be drowned out by authentic votes if they’re numerous.
Nothing more needs to be said on the subject of politics today. You all know who you’re voting for by now.
